Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Harlick boots to purchase?

If this is your first time purchasing a pair of Harlick boots, we recommend scheduling a virtual or in person fitting appointment.

Fitting appointments are meant to uncover any customizations that may be needed to support your skating needs. This includes a custom foot tracing to ensure the most optimal fit and size for your boots.

Color, boot materials, arch support and special designs will also be discussed.

What is the difference between an ice skating boot and roller skating boot?

Because of the narrow center of gravity, ice skating boots require a stronger and stiffer boot in order to better support the ankles.

Compared to roller skates, skaters need more flexibility in the ankles to have a better range of motion due to the wide wheel base.

Inline skates would be very similar to an ice skate because of the narrow center of gravity at the wheels.

What is the difference between a two layer and three layer construction boot?

Two layer construction boots will be slightly easier to break in. In the stiffer models, such as duo or double duo bond, good support is offered while keeping the weight down.

Three layer construction boots have more body and offer more support in the ankles. This option will require more break in but will ultimately offer more longevity to the life of the boot.

What is an orthopaedic arch support?

A custom innersole that is made exactly from the skater’s foot shape. The arch support helps skaters’ feet that pronate (inward rotation) by keeping them in a neutral position. It can also help skaters that have high arches by providing additional support. This is the best way to optimize for a custom fit.

Orthopaedic arch supports can be removed and adjusted over time.

In order for Harlick to create a custom orthopaedic arch support, a foot impression needs to be made. A cast is then poured into the foot impression to build the arch support.

Do I need an inside wedge correction?

An inside wedge correction is a thin wedge (⅛ to ¼ inch) that helps correct pronation (inward rotation) of the foot.

It helps to tilt the foot away from the inside portion of the boot which prevents cramping and muscle pain.

Maintaining an outside edge also becomes easier.

What customizations can help with toe pointing?

A lower cut back eliminates any discomfort at the top edge of the boot and increases overall range of motion, including toe pointing.

See available options below.

Low cut backstay (most similar to traditional design)

¼ to ½ inch deep cutout to increase toe pointing and range of motion

Low cut backstay with padded insert (most popular, recommended for freestyle)

¼ to ½ inch deep cutout to increase toe pointing and range of motion with an additional padded poron insert

Dance backstay (most range of motion)

½ to ¾ inch deep cutout to increase toe pointing and range of motion

Ideal for dance skaters.

BB backstay (most comfortable)

Low cut sides and back with ¼ inch polyurethane padding that extends above the top edge of the outer leather. It eliminates any discomfort at the top edge of a boot and increases overall range of motion.

What are the benefits of a carbon fiber sole?

Lightweight carbon fiber soles can reduce the boot weight by 20% without sacrificing durability and strength. Harlick only uses genuine carbon fiber.

Which sole finish option requires the least amount of maintenance?

The chem glaze coating gives the sole a long lasting, waterproofed protection. Minimal maintenance is required compared to natural sole finishes. This option is offered in dark tan or black.

Can I mount any blades and wheels on my Harlick boots?

Yes, all blade and wheel brands are compatible with Harlick boots. Our technicians can assist with the mounting process.

What is the difference between a stock and custom boot?

The custom boot is an exact replication of the foot shape compared to a standard stock last/mold.

In a custom boot, the upper leather is hand-cut from a pattern designed specifically from the skater’s measurements. More options and upgrades are available in custom boots compared to stock boots.

Stock boots require less time for Harlick to produce from start to finish if time is a concern.

How do I clean suede boots?

Mix one capful of Woolite detergent with warm water in a quart jar.

With a sponge, dampen the suede with the Woolite mix.

Using a fingernail scrub brush, softly rub the suede with the brush in a circular motion.

After the boots have dried overnight, rub the suede with the same (dry) fingernail brush to brush up the nap of the suede.

Note: If the suede becomes smooth you can very lightly sand the shiny area with some 120 grit sandpaper to bring back up the nap. Do this before cleaning. Be very careful not to sand too deep and avoid the stitching.

How do I care for my leather boots?

Wipe them down

Make sure they are air dried outside of the skating bag or case.

Do not place them in front of a fan or heater.
